What is pitching or the art of selling your audiovisual project?

At FX Barcelona Film School we know that artistic expression, creativity and technique are very important when you study film or enter the audiovisual world. However, it is equally or even more important to prepare yourself to successfully make the professional leap.

For this reason, our film students learn early on how to prepare a good pitch and present their audiovisual projects. However, do you know what pitching is? In this post we tell you and show you how to prepare them at FX Barcelona Film School.

Pitching: how to attract investment or sell your audiovisual project

Pitching is a term that comes from "sales pitch" or "sales pitch". It is the brief presentation of an idea for a film or television series by the scriptwriter or director of the project.

Although it is characterized by its brevity (between 5-10 minutes), the aim is to show the full potential of the idea, i.e.: that the project could be developed successfully. For this reason, it is key to have palpable information, such as synopsis, budget estimation and even possible cast, scenarios, etc.

.

Thus, pitching should be both verbal and visual and, for example, many professionals back up their pitch with storyboards.

In some cases, you can even animate the storyboard and capture the interest of investors through their eyes. But there are a multitude of options and techniques!

A basic aspect of a good pitch is knowing how to hold the attention of investors or potential producers and arouse their interest. In just a few minutes, you need to be both evocative and precise! The way in which you approach your pitch, which will depend on the type of project and investors, as well as your ability to convey it, are key.

How does a student of FX Barcelona Film School learn to make a good pitch?

Back to the beginning, at FX Barcelona Film School we aim to prepare our students to access the labor market and work in the film and audiovisual industry. To achieve this, it is essential to learn pitching techniques and how to sell a project!

The different film and screenwriting courses include pitching as an important part of the syllabus. For example, students of the Film Career at FX Barcelona Film School learn the art of pitching from the very beginning, both theoretically and practically.

In fact, these last few weeks the 1st year students have had their first pitching session! Over two sessions on the set of FX Barcelona Film School, they had to present a short film project verbally and visually, which they had to support with a dossier. It is also very important the defense of the project before the jury's questions.

Once all the pitches have been made, the faculty and management will choose two projects to be realized in June. Throughout this month, students will experience the process of shooting, editing and editing of their short films, final exercise of the first course of the Carrera de Cine.

In this post you could see some of the presentations of the students of FX Barcelona Film School that took place on Tuesday 22nd and Monday 28th of May. All of them already know what it's like to face the realization of a pitch!

And you, do you want to develop your career in the world of cinema? What are you waiting for to start it with us?
