If your dream is to work in character animation, maybe you are not sure what field to specialize in: designing characters? modeling them? bringing them to life? A first step in this decision is to know the difference between Modeling and 3D Character Animation. From FX ANIMATION Barcelona 3D & Film School, we tell you about it!
Difference between 3D Modeling and 3D Animation
To better understand the difference between 3D Modeling and 3D Animation, it is important to know that the process of creating a 3D animated film or a video game is composed of different stages, in which specialists in each field work.
The first phase, prior to 3D Modeling, is the design of the concept art or creation of the visual style that the project and characters will have. Once the art directors and designers conclude their work, which includes the creation of scenarios and general environment, it is the turn of the modelers.
The 3D Modeling is the stage in which the concept art is interpreted and both the characters and the rest of the elements are built in three dimensions: it is the 3D version of the previous work. This can be done through polygons or sculpting.
The modeler must combine a deep technical knowledge that is integrated into the subsequent processes, anatomy and 3D sculpting, with a great creative-artistic ability, since his work must be able to convey the emotions that the artists have devised.
For its part, 3D Animation takes the characters, objects and scenarios already built to bring them to life. Of course, the animator provides the movement to these characters, but his process is much broader: he is an actor working with digital puppets.
The 3D animator must know how to tell the story, give psychology to each character and give them characteristic movements. To do this, he has a number of resources that allow the animation to convey emotions.
Between 3D Modeling and 3D Animation, but also after, there are more stages: the creation of textures and shadows, rigging, lighting or rendering, among others. But, broadly speaking, these are the differences and the functions of these specialists!
And you, do you want to study 3D Modeling and Concept Art to create characters?
